A lot of people are looking at the pistol's RoF, figuring it's DPS from what's listed and whining, however, I think there is more than meets the eye.
What we know:
-RoF -Single shot damage -Charged shot damage -Charged shot time -Per devblog you can fire semi auto shots -Per devblog you can charge and release
Quote:"It also features a charged shot: Simply hold the trigger until itGÇÖs full charged, and release to fill some poor unsuspecting victimGÇÖs face with plasma."
It is hard to tell exactly what this means. Does it mean you can hold the shot until it is perfect, and then let go, but then have to wait for the 'discharge/overheat'? Does the overheat hurt you? How long is the overheat?
Also the devblog mentions one more thing...
Quote:It has lower damage and range than the Scrambler pistol, but a higher rate of fire and larger clip.
Interestingly, the scrambler pistol's RoF is .15s while the ion pistol is .16.
This brings me to the things we don't yet know...
- Can you not fully charge a shot and then follow with more shots? - How long does the overheating mechanic take? - What will the operation skill do?
A lot of the new sidearms come down to this last question. If magsec smg kik/dispersion sucks and operation skill only helps kick and not dispersion, then it's DPS may NOT beat AR 'effectiveness'.
My theory is that because of a 'clip size' bonus to ion pistol being REALLY dumb, it's OPERATION skill bonus would be either:
-Overheat time reduction- -RoF bonus- or -max charged shot damage bonus-.
My money is on RoF bonus. The reason why is because a '5% RoF bonus per level' would make 2 points of operation skills make the ion pistol be true to the devblog to have a better RoF. At level V the RoF is .12 or taking its DPS up to significantly better and more deadly levels appropriate for a gallente up close blaster weapon.

It might compliment a CR or RR well with it's charged shot(knock out a good chunk of shields I'd imagine, if not all) then start filling them full of space lead. Yeah This is basically what makes it useful. The charge shot might make it one of the most widely used sidearms because of this 1-2 combo. The only real reason to use a sidearm now is if you are either out of rifle ammo and want to finish someone off, or if you are running something that isn't a rifle. This would be a good reason to use a sidearm in combination with your rifle in many more situations. It all depends o if you can switch weapons if its overheated, which I don't believe you can do now with any of the other weapons that overheat unfortunately. If you cant switch, or if the overheat cooldown is too long then this really wont be that great, otherwise it will be pretty good combo weapon to run. Sadly, if it functions like the other overheat weapons, you won't be able to fast swap since you will "stunned" for a few seconds. I'm hoping that's not the case, or that the cool down time is short. Give us short CDT for the Ion CCP!
There's cooldown time and then there's seize duration. I think Logibro said CDT is .5 seconds CDT but i could be misremembering. |

For a CQC pistol (LOWEST RANGE BY FAAAAAAAAAAAR), that's a death sentence. Also, unless they're changing the scrambler pistol operation bonus, scrambler pistol only has 1 shot less than the Ion Pistol. Couple that with the fact that the Ion Pistol has **** for damage per clip (600) and you've got a ****** pistol in your hands.
The only way the ion pistol would have any redeeming advantage would be if you could charge and fire-fire-fire like the scrambler rifle. |
